On Tuesday 13 October, from 6 to 7.30 pm, I will lead a medieval literature workshop at the Lluïsos de Gràcia (Plaça del Nord, 7), organised by the Banc del Temps de Gràcia, the neighbourhood time bank. I will present the great figure of Ramon Llull in an hour-and-a-half talk designed for a general audience.
I am really looking forward to it. Llull is an outstanding figure in our literature, and he has fascinated me so much that I have written a book about him. He created literary Catalan, among many other talents, and he is an essential figure of medieval Europe and a cornerstone of our culture.
The legend behind his name says it all: llum de l'ull, the light of the eye — hence Llull, the light that shows the way. And that light reaches far beyond Catalonia: his Latin works, which we find in Freiburg (Germany), draw scholars from all over the world who go there to study them.
I want to present him in an approachable way, so that whoever comes to the workshop really knows who that Majorcan merchant was: the man who gave everything up at thirty, who chose to write in Catalan when all serious thought was written in Latin, and who used the symbol of a ladder to imagine drawing closer to God as spiritual perfection.
If you would like to read the presentation beforehand and bring me questions, you will find it among the free materials on this website:
